Gloom, Despair, and Agony on Me?

by Tim
(USA)

I play music in a folk group and we are trying to find the lyrics and music for "Blue, Despair, and Agony on Me" . . . or is it "Gloom,Despair, and Agony on Me?" Do you have any leads? I'm trying to round up the verses and hopefully the tune. Sincerely, Tim

Hee Haw Country

Hestia, I had an unlucky day, and the worst part of it was that this tune kept running through my head.

I'll looking for an MP3 of "Gloom, Despair and Agony on me"
by: Alonzo

Does anyone have an mp3 of Gloom, Despair and Agony on Me" from Hee Haw? I can't find one anywhere (other than on the DVDs, and I don't know how to get the music off of the DVD to make an mp3).

Gloom, Despair

While the refrain remained the same, the comedy verses changed for each show. The song copyright is probably held by Gaylord Program Services, which also holds the copyright for Hee Haw. You might find www.heehaw.com interesting.

Yep, they did change them. Anyone know more?
by: mark r

They definitely did change the verses for each performance. Does anyone know any more of the verses? I remember part of one that stars out "Last night I went out with what's her name again," and ends with "she broke the doo-hickey off of the thingamajig."

I would certainly like for someone to fill in the rest of it. (I could be wrong...this may have been a "free-standing" song, but I THINK it was one of the aforementioned verses).

Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me

We figured she was rich, loaded to the hilt
And we figured she had class like the Vanderbilts
'Cause we had heard for years how she was so well reared
How was we to know they meant the way she was built

Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me

The chorus stayed the same but the verse changed
by: Robert

Quoted from Answer.com.... * "Gloom, Despair and Agony On Me", Another beloved sketch usually performed by four male cast members sitting around in hillbilly garb surrounded by moonshine jugs and looking overtly miserable. They song began with the chorus, which all of them sang with each one alternating (in lip-synch) a mournful howl after each of the first three lines. The chorus went:

"Gloom, despair and agony on me-e!
Deep dark depression, excessive misery-y!
If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all!
Gloom, despair and agony on me-e-e!"

Each of the quartet would sing one line of the verse- a different one for each performance.

(In later seasons the female cast got their own version of the song, first just lip-synching the male vocals, but later getting their own woman-ized version complete with female howls of mourning.)

They were always the same words
by: HestiaTheGreek

I don't recall the words ever changing and I couldn't count on all my toes and fingers to tell you how many times we listened to and sang along with them on HeeHaw...so many times that when my kids and grandkids knew they were getting on my bad side, they would all gang up and start singing that song just as pitifully as they could.
Add a post to this site if you want the mp3 and I will create a disposable email address and put it on this site so you can let me know where to send the mp3.
Good luck on your folk group; I hope none of my grandkids sing with your group...gloom, despair... oh, agony..not again.
