Johnny Cash 2011
Johnny Cash
Alot of this from memory, from the exact words Johnny Cash spoke, as documented on film by CMT. Childhood, death of 14-year-old brother Jack...
Jack died when Johnny was 12, Jack was very religious, wanted to be a preacher. He fell on one of those big flat table saws. According to JC, Jack lived for about eight days in the hospital, heard the angels singing just before death.
Married Vivian Liberto after getting out of the Air Force in 1954.
(Johnny)After I became famous, Vivian would see how the girls would fall at our feet, just beggin', crawlin', you know. This drove her nuts...she never really supported my music career anyhow." Landed an audition with Sun Records and its founder, Sam Phillips, in 1955. Quote... (Sam to Johnny) "John, I want you to play what you feel, then we'll work it." ------- Jumping forward > (Johnny, several years ago) "After Columbia/CBS dropped me in '86, I tried the Mercury label. Mercury was lacking, lacking the people with the skills."
"It took Rick Rubin at American Recordings to take my music, just exactly the way Sam Phillips did." ----------
