LOOKING FOR CERTAIN SONG/ARTIST, TWO KIDS WALKING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND BEING HIT BY A CAR

by EVA A
(FL)

I AM SEARCHING FOR A SONG THAT MY DAD USED TO LISTEN TO, BUT I DO NOT KNOW THE NAME OF THE ARTIST. IT WAS TITLED 'DRUNK DRIVER' AND IT WAS ABOUT TWO KIDS WALKING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND BEING HIT BY A CAR WHICH JUST HAPPENED TO BE THEIR FATHER. ONE KID SURVIVED THE WRECK AND THE OTHER ONE WAS KILLED INSTANTLY. DO YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW WHAT SONG/ARTIST I AM TALKING ABOUT. I WOULD LIKE FOR MY CHILDREN TO LISTEN TO THIS AND GET THE MESSAGE THAT I GOT FROM IT BUT NOONE IN MY FAMILY CAN REMEMBER WHO SANG IT. THANKS.

The Drunken driver
by: Anonymous

as I recall it was done by a preacher some time in the 1930 I think and this is How I remember it going hope it heps.

The Drunk Driver

Now listen you, drunken drivers
While here on earth you dwell
You never know when the time will come
you'll have to say farewell

Its to your Dear old Mother and sisters
though maney miles away
so don't be drinkin whisky
while drivin on your way

I saw an accident one day
that Would charm the hearts of men
And teach them not to drink a drop
With a steerin' wheel in their hand

This awful accident occured
On the twentieth day of May
causing to Dear children
To sleep beneath the clay

These two dear kids walking side by side
upon the state highway
Their loviley mother, she had died
And their Daddy had run away

They were talking of their lovley parents
How sad their hearts did feel
When around the curve came a speedin' car
With a drunk man at the wheel

The driver saw these two dear kids
And hooted a drunkards sound
"Get out of the road, you little fools"
as the car had brought them down

the bumper stuck that little girl
taking her life away
while the little boy in a gore of blood in a ditch line there he lay

The driver staggered from his car
To see what he had done
His heart sank within him
When he saw his dyin' ones

He then picked up his darrling ones
And carried them to his car
Then leanin' on the runnin' board
He prayed a drunkard's prayer

Sayin', "Please, oh Lord, forgive me
For this awful crime I've done"
His attention then was called away
by the words of his dyin' son

Sayin' "Take us to our mother, Dad
who sleeps beneath the ground
It was you and her we was talkin' about
When the car had brought us down"

"And please, dear Daddy, don't drink no more
While drivin' on your way
But meet us with our mother, Dad
In heaven some sweet day"

Drunken Driver song
by: Anonymous

I was just doing a search for some country music stuff and come across this site and just thought I'd read this and I saw your question and just thought that sounds like a great sad song so I found this out.
You might already have found it but any way here's the lyrics.

Drunken Driver Lyrics
(By FERLIN HUSKY)

(G. Adams)

Friends, there's somethin' been hauntin' me
And I just got to tell you 'bout it.

I saw an accident one day
That would chill the heart of any man
And teach them not to drink a drop
While the steering wheel's in their hand.

This awfull accident occurred
On the 20th day of May
And caused two dear little children
To be sleeping beneath the clay.

These two little kids walked side by side
Along the state highway
Their poor old mother, she had died
And their daddy had run away.

As these two little kids walked arm in arm
How sad their hearts did feel
When around the curb came a speeding car
With a drunk man at the wheel.

The drunk man saw the two little kids
And he hollered a drunken sound
Get out of the road you little fools
And the car it brought them down.

The bumper struck the little girl
Taking her life away
While the little boy in a puddle of blood
In the ditch, lying there did lay.

The drunk man staggered from his car
To see the damage that he had done
And he let out a yell you could hear for miles
When he recognized his dying son.

Such mourning from a drunken man
I've never heard before
While kneeling at the running board
He prayed to heaven's door.

Saying, ''Oh God, please forgive me
For this awful crime I've done.''
And his attention then was called away
By the words of his dying son.

And he said, ''Daddy, why did you do this to us?
How come you run us to the ground?
It was you and mommy we was talking about
When the car, it brought us down.''

''And I was just telling little sister
That I knew we'd see you again someday
But daddy why did it have to be like this?
Why did it have to be this way?''

''Why, daddy why?...''
